Board continues budget, bylaws revisions

BURRO board members met Wednesday to continue their discussions of the budget proposed for RY 2014-2015 and the bylaws revision proposal. All in all, the meeting was productive, and with some minor tweaks, the budget was settled. Financially, the Burleson Rotary Club is sound, and the club will be returning about $22,000 to the community by way of service projects and charitable contributions next Rotary Year. Thank you, thank you Treasurer Charles for your hard work on this important task.

The bylaws project is ongoing; in fact, it has been going on for several years! A couple of committees and a few board members have contributed to this effort in recent years, but no final product has been produced for the club's approval. That will change soon. President-Elect Manuel is spearheading the bylaws revision process, and his goal is to present the revised bylaws to the club near the start of RY 2014-2015. In case you haven't checked your calendar, that year begins in just over one month, so Manuel and his fellow board members are under the gun. This week, the board discussed the first half of the bylaws document; the remainder will be the primary agenda item for the June board meeting.

This week's meeting was a special, called meeting, necessary because of the critical nature of the budget and bylaws projects. We all appreciate the dedication of our board members, and we thank them for the time and energy they devote to the Burleson Rotary Club.

The next regular meeting of the board is set for June 18, the third Wednesday of the month.

Successful flag season start

I know it was successful because only one subscriber complained (via email, at least).

One subscriber was overlooked; I'm sure he was overlooked by mistake. He emailed his complaint, and the Burleson Rotary Club responded. The only other email we received was from a resident who wanted to be added to a route -- a new subscriber.

Reports are sketchy at this time, but the involvement of the Boy Scouts also appears to have been successful. We can hope this involvement will grow as the Scouts learn the job and recognize the benefits their groups will enjoy. Thank you, Kristen Nelon, for working to get the flag season off-and-running so well.

With Kristen's upcoming departure (she's headed north for a new job), the club needs someone to take the lead on this project. If you think you've got what it takes, please speak up. And do it soon. The next federal holiday is not far away.

Surely you jest

During its heyday the Wells Fargo Company employed a number of specialized stagecoaches such as one with a church for Sunday operation. One of the more popular models featured a darkroom on board, so passengers who took pictures could have them processed en route and the prints delivered at their destination.

One day a stagecoach equipped with a darkroom was headed for Wichita when, passing through a small town, it was intercepted by the local marshal, who said, "Halt in the name of the law!"

"What's the problem?" the stagecoach driver asked.

"You should know that the operation of a mobile darkroom is illegal in Kansas," the marshall said.

At this point two psychologists on horseback arrived on the scene. One of them said, "I suppose what we have here is a classic case of the Oedipus complex."

The other said, "No, it's much simpler than that -- it's just an arrested stage of development."

There was a knock on the door, and I answered it, but all that was there was a snail. I picked it up and threw it into the street.

Two weeks later, another knock on the door. I opened the door and it was the snail again.

The snail says, "What was that all about?"
