Busy times ahead for Rotarians

Even as the Rotary Year winds down, the business of Rotary propels us along, and the next couple of weeks hold plenty service opportunities for all Rotarians. It all starts this weekend.

Saturday, June 14 is Flag Day, one of the federal holidays we celebrate with our Flags for Scholars project. Flag Day memorializes the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the nation's flag. The observance originated in 1885 when a Wisconsin school teacher organized a celebration on the 108th anniversary of the original action. Flag Day became widely recognized around the country, but it wasn't a formal event until 1949 when president Harry S. Truman signed an Act of Congress designating June 14th as National Flag Day. Rotary flag teams will deploy and retrieve flags as scheduled by their team captains this weekend.

On Wednesday, club officers and directors will meet for breakfast and to finish business regarding the club bylaws. That meeting, the postponed June board meeting, starts at 7 a.m. at Our Place restaurant. It is open to all members.

Other Rotary volunteers will be transporting four Burleson high school students to Camp R.Y.L.A. at Texas Woman's University in Denton. Two adults will drive the students to Denton on Thursday, June 19; two more are needed to pick up the students on Sunday and drive them back to Burleson. Get details below, in the next article.

The following Saturday, June 21, will find Rotarians gathering at Burly Corporation for a couple of efforts. Some will be inspecting and repairing a rack of flags, and others will be assembling a float for the city's Independence Day parade on July 4.

What a great feeling it is, to know that all this work will be accomplished because Rotarians are so committed to service. Thank you for taking your part in this work.

Drivers needed

Four high school students from Burleson will be enjoying Camp R.Y.L.A. at Texas Woman's University in Denton in another week. At the end of that experience, on Sunday, June 22, two adults will drive to Denton, pick up the students (and their luggage), and drive them back to Burleson. The plan is laid out, the logistics are in order, leaving only one challenge:  the two adults have yet to be identified.

President-Elect Manuel Trevino is coordinating the project. He would like to hear from you if you can help. Email Manuel or speak with him at Friday's meeting. Please.

Surely you jest

A well-worn one-dollar bill and a similarly distressed twenty-dollar bill arrived at a Federal Reserve Bank to be retired. As they moved along the conveyor belt to be burned, they struck up a conversation. The twenty-dollar bill reminisced about its travels all over the country.

"I've had a pretty good life," the twenty proclaimed. "Why I've been to Las Vegas and Atlantic City, the finest restaurants in New York, performances on Broadway, and even a cruise to the Caribbean."

"Wow!" said the one-dollar bill. "You've really had an exciting life!"

"So, tell me," says the twenty, "where have you been throughout your lifetime?"

The one-dollar bill replies, "Oh, I've been to the Methodist Church, the Baptist Church, the Lutheran Church."

The twenty-dollar bill interrupts, "What's a church?"

Two elderly gentlemen from a retirement center were sitting on a bench under a tree when one turns to the other and says: "Slim, I'm 83 years old now and I'm just full of aches and pains. I know you're about my age. How do you feel?"

Slim says, "I feel just like a newborn baby."

"Really!? Like a newborn baby!?"

"Yep. No hair, no teeth, and I think I just wet my pants."

Beware of new email scam claiming to be from RI President Burton

A new email falsely claiming to be from RI President Ron Burton is targeting Rotary members.  A letter attached to the email asks the recipient to send $1,500 to rescue missing children in China and claims that the sender will be rewarded with $3,000.

The fraudulent email has the subject line “RI President Ron Burton” and is sent from a fake email address. The letter attached to the email includes the Rotary logo, Rotary digital letterhead, and Burton’s electronic signature.

The email is a scam. Rotary staff is working to resolve the issue. Avoid being the victim of scams by deleting any email that appears suspicious.
