Background check alert

The special education students' Spring Meet is April 17. Volunteers must have a background check by state law.

The FREE background check can be completed in advance at any BISD school, or BISD can do it on the morning of the Spring Meet if the volunteer presents a valid, current driver's license.

Rotary proud

Now, in the final quarter of RY 2013-2014, Rotary Districts everywhere are planning their district conferences. We are evaluating the work we have accomplished, and we are celebrating. When we recognize what we have done as a group, Rotarians appreciate the value of serving together. Our district, Rotary District 5790, holds District Conference in the Fort Worth Stock Yards the first weekend in May. Check out the conference schedule on the district website, and you will see that our club is sponsoring a clay shoot competition on Thursday. Conference ends Sunday morning.

During April, Rotary International celebrates its successful magazine publications. April is Magazine Month. In addition to The Rotarian, which you receive each month, Rotary published several region-specific magazines.

Celebrate Magazine Month by checking out The Rotarian's new website, . You'll find highlights from each issue, along with selected stories from the archives. Each feature story appears in full, accompanied by photos and videos. It's really an attractive site; give it a whirl. Now, if only they would put the crossword puzzle on line . . .

Flag repair day

You can help! We need you!

Time has come to inspect, repair, and/or replace flags for the Flags for Scholars season, which begins Memorial Day weekend. At 8:30 Saturday morning, Rotarians will meet at Burly Corporation, in the back-most building, and ready the flags.

Everyone can help; no advanced skills required. Join the group for some good Rotary fellowship and service. Come and stay as long as you can, and the job will be finished by noon, if not earlier.

Major fundraiser on the horizon

In just three weeks, on the afternoon of Friday, April 25, golfers tee off for the C.A. Roy and Floyd Walker Memorial Golf Tournament. The Burleson Rotary Club co-sponsors this tournament, along with the Burleson Area Mid-Day Rotary Club. We share the profits, but we also share the responsibilities.

This major fundraiser requires lots of volunteers. There is a wide range of opportunities; please try to help. Scott Finks is our tournament organizer, and he will tell you how you can contribute.

Join the End Polio Now Thunderclap

On March 27, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative declared the South-East Asia Region of the World Health Organization polio-free, an important milestone in the worldwide effort to eradicate polio. The 11 countries in the region -- Bangladesh, Bhutan, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Timor-Leste -- are home to 1.8 billion people and represent the fourth of six regions worldwide to be officially certified polio-free.

Scotch with water

A lady goes to the bar on a cruise ship and orders a Scotch with two drops of water.

As the bartender gives her the drink she says, 'I'm on this cruise to celebrate my 80th birthday and it's today..'

The bartender says, 'Well, since it's your birthday, I'll buy you a drink. In fact, this one is on me.'

As the woman finishes her drink, the woman to her right says, 'I would like to buy you a drink, too.'

The old woman says, 'Thank you Bartender, I want a Scotch with two drops of water.'

'Coming up,' says the bartender.

As she finishes that drink, the man to her left says, 'I would like to buy you one, too.'

The old woman says, 'Thank you. Bartender, I want another Scotch with two drops of water.'

'Coming right up,' the bartender says.

As he gives her the drink, he says, 'Ma'am, I'm dying of curiosity. Why the Scotch with only two drops of water?'

The old woman replies, 'Sonny, when you're my age, you've learned how to hold your liquor. Holding your water, however, is a whole other issue.'
