The South-East Asia Region of the World Health Organization is officially polio-free! The 11 countries in the region -- Bangladesh, Bhutan, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Timor-Leste -- are home to 1.8 billion people. Four of six WHO regions worldwide are now polio-free.

Background check alert
The special education students' Spring Meet is April 17. Volunteers must have a background check by state law.
The FREE background check can be completed in advance at any BISD school, or BISD can do it on the morning of the Spring Meet if the volunteer presents a valid, current driver's license.
April: Rotary Magazine Month, the opening of the spring quarter, the final quarter of RY2013-2014. The Burleson Rotary Club's Board of Directors is seeing its service efforts bear fruit, and it looks forward eagerly to the next Rotary Year. Most of the leaders on the current Board will continue board service next year, albeit with a few shifts and replacements. At Wednesday's board meeting, the atmosphere was cheerily positive.
Our next fundraiser, two weeks away, is already a huge success, as you will read in the golf tournament story, below. Scholarship applications are due this week (Friday), and we have $10,000 to hand to a Burleson student of our choice, thanks to your service via our Flags for Scholars project. Read about that project's recent party below, also. Your service extends into many other areas, too, and the Board thanks you, sincerely.
President-elect Manuel Trevino is forming next year's committees; he may ask you. Will you serve? Manuel is giving special attention to Club Service -- membership development, Rotary Awareness, etc. -- as he develops his strategies for RY2014-2015. He and his Board are primed to "hit the ground running" when July arrives. You could be part of the action, if you can keep up.
Board service is not particularly onerous, but it does require a commitment of time and energy. Thank the members of the BURRO Board of Directors for their leadership; they thank you for your support and service.
Golf fundraiser a win-win for Burleson Rotary clubs
On the afternoon of April 25, the Burleson Rotary Club and our scion, the Burleson Area Mid Day Rotary Club, will conduct the C.A. Roy & Floyd Walker Memorial Golf Tournament. The tournament already has proved successful as a fundraising event, with all team slots spoken for.
There still exists openings for Hole Sponsors. Please, if you can, help identify potential Hole Sponsors. Project Leader Scott Finks needs to know. David Lockard can help you, also.
Hole Sponsorship sales increase our income, thus enhancing our Rotary service. Rotary Awareness gets a booster shot, too. Plus, the sponsor's business gets noted (and noticed) for helping support our efforts. A real win-win opportunity.
Flag repair success
In just an hour-and-a-half, eight or nine Rotarians worked on Saturday morning to ready our flag stock for the season ahead. Flag Project leader Kristen Nelon led the charge, and President Rhyan rallied the reinforcements as the team of Burleson Rotary Club's best completed the project. Flags for Scholars, which will produce another $10,000 scholarship for a deserving Burleson student, opens the season on Memorial Day. Saturday's work party was the first step toward the success of the season.
Kristen and Rhyan are pursuing a plan to involve Burleson Boy Scouts in this year's posting activities. Keep tuned in for updates.

Special Athletes Track Meet nears
Next week, Rotarian volunteers will serve at BISD's Special Athletes Track Meet. Many have helped in the past, and the tradition continues this year.
Judy Arnold, who coordinates our involvement in the project, reminds you that a background check is required. See the story, left column. The check may be completed on site on event day, but volunteers must arrive by 7:30 a.m. for that purpose. The games begin at 9 a.m.
If you did not sign up, but still plan to volunteer, please notify Judy so she can coordinate event assignments. Thank you!
