AsstGov/Pres Rhyan gives District Conference talk

Rhyan, in his role as Club President, will recount the true story of District Conference soon. As far as I know, Rhyan is the only BURROtarian who attended this year's conference. I expect Rhyan was appropriately honored for his service as Assistant Governor, the role he accepted just weeks ago.

The headline (above) is pure conjecture, but it was supposed to happen.

A team, led by Weldon Whiteman, produced a PowerPoint talk and a display board featuring the Burleson Rotary Club's partnership with the Rotary Club of Constantia, South Africa. Our club's monetary contribution seeded a series of matches that earned funding through The Rotary Foundation for Constantia's Abalimi Project.

President Rhyan presented the Burleson-Constantia talk at District Conference last weekend, if all unfolded as planned. To know for certain, we will have to wait for Rhyan's report to the club. That could happen any Friday morning, so try not to miss. All we have at the present is the beta version of the display board, a part of which is shown in the photo.

The Abalimi Project teaches otherwise unemployable local citizens to produce food crops and trains them to operate a distribution center. Weldon and spouse Pam have traveled to Constantia, are friends of that club's Past-President and his wife, and have seen the lift the Abalimi project has brought to the people there. Weldon's (and Pam's) vision for the project inspired us to follow this branch of Rotary Service. Thank you, both, for your commitment to service.

Surely you jest

On the first day of college, the Dean addressed the students, pointing out some of the rules, "The female dormitory will be out-of-bounds for all male students, and the male dormitory to the female students. Anybody caught breaking this rule will be fined $20 the first time."

He continued, "Anybody caught breaking this rule the second time will be fined $60. Being caught a third time will cost you a fine of $180. Are there any questions?"

At this point, a male student in the crowd inquired, "How much for a season pass?"

Did you hear about the human cannonball?  First day on the job, he was fired..

A man walks into a bar, notices a very large jar on the counter, and sees that it's filled to the brim with $10 notes. He guesses there must be at least $10 thousand in it. He approaches the bartender and asks, "What's with the money in the jar?"

"Well, you pay $10, and if you pass three tests, you get all the money in the jar and the keys to a brand new Lexus."

The man certainly isn't going to pass this up, so he asks, "What are the three tests?"

"You gotta pay first," says the bartender, "those are the rules."

So, after thinking it over a while, the man gives the bartender $10 which he stuffs into the jar.

"Okay," says the bartender, "here's what you need to do:

"First - You have to drink a whole quart of tequila, in 60 seconds or less."

"Second - There's a pit bull chained in the back with a bad tooth. You have to remove that tooth with your bare hands."

"Third - There's a 90-year old lady upstairs who's never had sex. You have to take care of that problem."

The man is stunned! "I know I paid my $10 -- but I'm not an idiot!  I won't do it!  You'd have to be nuts to drink a quart of tequila and then do all those other things!"

"Your call," says the bartender, "but your money stays where it is."

As time goes on, the man has a few more drinks and finally says, "Where's the damn tequila?!"

He grabs the bottle with both hands and drinks it as fast as he can.  Tears stream down both cheeks and he drinks it in 58 seconds!

Next, he staggers out the back door where he sees the pit bull chained to a pole. Soon, the people inside the bar hear loud growling, screaming, and sounds of a terrible fight --  then  nothing but silence!

Just when they think that the man surely must be dead, he staggers back into the bar. His clothes are ripped to shreds and he's bleeding from bites and gashes all over his body.

He drunkenly says, "Now...., where's that old woman with the bad tooth?"

Choose the winning book title and you could win a trip to the convention

The Rotary Foundation will celebrate 100 years of Doing Good in the World in 2016-17. To commemorate this occasion, TRF commissioned Rotarian and author David Forward to write the Foundation's definitive history. Every great book deserves an equally great name, so we're asking your help to choose one.

Until 15 June, you can for one of four selected titles or submit your own. Enter the lottery for a free copy of the book. Ten winners will receive a book signed by the author, and one winner will also receive a paid registration for two to the 2017 Rotary Convention in Atlanta. Winners will be announced in July.

The book will be available in early 2016.
