Rotarian's Chris McLucas (Arlington Sunrise RC) and Reyna Castillo (Highland Village RC) have just returned from India where they participated in National Immunization Day by administering the Polio Vaccine in Ghaziabad, India on February 23, 2014.

Montgomery to assume Club Service tasks

Rotarian Jeff Montgomery has volunteered to publish the club's newsletter and to produce the Friday morning slide show, starting next month. Although he may be relatively new to Rotary, Jeff's commitment to these Club Service tasks reveals a Service Above Self attitude personifying the true spirit of Rotary. Thank you, Jeff, for stepping into this role.

As club members who benefit from Jeff's service, let us give him our support and encouragement. Help Jeff by making your contributions -- information for inclusion in the newsletter, photos for enriching the slide show, jokes suitable for our newsletter audience, and so forth. You have kindly contributed these to me, so I know you will help Jeff, too.

Most of all, be sure you let Jeff know that you appreciate his work. A few kind words of support go a long, long way.

Club Service is integral to the success of any Rotary club. All our officers and directors need your encouragement as they serve to keep our club vibrant and effective in our local community and in the broader community of Rotary. They volunteer for more than just a weekly breakfast meeting. Thank them, and follow their lead. Better yet, join them. Club Service opportunities always exist, so offer to serve in a role that fits your schedule and your talents.

World Peace Day

Each year the International Day of Peace, also known as World Peace Day, is observed around the world on 21 September. This is an occasion to recognize the efforts of those who have worked hard to end conflict and promote peace.

The theme of this year's International Day of Peace is the "Right of Peoples to Peace". Peace is a fundamental right of all citizens and essential for co-existence, well-being and happiness.

Rotary's response to Ebola outbreak

Rotary continues to follow the developments surrounding the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and advice of the World Health Organization and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, our partners in international public health.

Strengthening the health infrastructure and supporting and sustaining the deployment of government health workers throughout these outbreak areas are greatly needed. Although Rotary has limited opportunities to respond at a corporate level, our strength as an organization is firmly rooted in the grassroots response of Rotary clubs and Rotarians.

Clubs around the world are creating or joining coalitions that are raising funds as well as purchasing and shipping safety equipment and supplies. If you want to let others know about your club project, you can post it on Rotary Ideas, Rotary’s crowdsourcing tool. Club officers can request partners, online contributions, volunteers, and in-kind donations for their projects. While only Rotary projects can request resources, anyone – including the public – can visit the site and donate.

Surely you jest

All of his life Len from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, had heard stories of an amazing family tradition. It seems that his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all been able to walk on water on their 21st birthday. On that day, they'd walk across the lake to the boat club for their first legal drink.

So when Len's 21st birthday came around, he and his pal Corky took a boat out to the middle of the lake. Len stepped out of the boat and nearly drowned!

Corky just managed to pull him to safety. Furious and confused, Len went to see his grandmother. "Grandma, it's my 21st birthday, so why can't I walk across the lake, like my father, his father, and his father before him?"

Granny looked Len straight in the eyes, and said, "Because, you idiot, your father, grandfather and great grandfather were born in January, and you were born in July."

Two cannibals meet one day. The first cannibal says, "You know, I just can't seem to get a tender missionary. I've baked 'em, I've roasted 'em, I've stewed 'em, I've barbecued 'em, I've even tried every sort of marinade. I just cannot seem to get them tender."

The second cannibal asks, "What kind of missionary do you use?"

The other replied, "You know, the ones that hang out at that place at the bend of the river. They have those brown cloaks with a rope around the waist and their sort of bald on top with a funny ring of hair on their heads."

"Ah ha!" he replies. "No wonder.. those are friars!"
