Labor Day

Monday is Labor Day, which means that the Burleson Rotary Club will be posting U.S. flags in the community. While much of this work is now done by local Boy Scouts, it is still our project, and we still are, ultimately, responsible for its success. Several members still have direct involvement in the Flags for Scholars project, and they may need your help. Be prepared.

District 5790 Governor Larry Petrash visits Burleson

District Governor Larry Petrash makes his official visit to the Burleson Rotary Club this week. He will meet with the club's board on Thursday evening, and then he will address the membership at the Friday meeting. This special event allows Governor Larry to learn more about us, and it allows us to learn his priorities for our Rotary district.

Every member should plan to attend Friday's meeting. Our club is active and vibrant, and it is important that the District Governor sense our vibrancy when he is among us.

To help you know Larry Petrash better, here is a bit of biographical information:

Larry was born in Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey, to Texas parents, and raised in a military family, moving to such places as Ansbach, Germany and Tokyo, Japan. He completed his high school education in Houston, Texas, and graduated from Texas A&M University with a BBA in Management and a Masters of Education Degree in Educational Administration with a minor in Business. He served over 27 years in the U.S. Army Reserve, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Medical Service Corps.

He is a Risk Management Consultant assisting companies with captive management, self-insurance programs, and commercial insurance portfolios. He also provides Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety consulting. In 1994 he received his Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter designation, the highest designation in the insurance industry, and received his Associate in Risk Management in 1989. Larry is an Adjunct Professor of Business at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Larry has served his church and his community over the last 30 years. Currently, he is President of the Wichita Falls Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, President of the Southside Youth Center in Wichita Falls, Vice President of Risk Management for the Northwest Texas Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and holds the prestigious Silver Beaver Award.

Larry has been married to Paula since 1968. Both received degrees from Texas A&M University. Paula is a Nursing Home Administrator and Social Worker. They have three children and four grandchildren.

Larry joined Rotary in San Antonio, Texas in 1978. He is past president of the Rotary Club of Wichita Falls (2005-2006), past assistant governor (2011-2012). He, and wife Paula, are both Paul Harris Fellows. Paula is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Iowa Park. Both continue their service to Rotary.

Emma's blog

Emma Dhabit, newly arrived from France to spend a year in Burleson, wastes no time. In just over one week, Emma has seen a rodeo, helped feed cattle at the Justice ranch, started school at Centennial (where she joined the volleyball team), and more. During this whirlwind week, Emma has been posting to her blog, and you can follow her here as she documents her experiences as a Rotary Youth Exchange student.

Brooke and Delight Justice are hosting Emma and introducing her to life in Texas. Brooke will be bringing her to our Friday meeting on September 5, and that will be your first opportunity to meet Emma and help welcome her to Burleson.

Surely you jest

An old cowboy sat down at the bar and ordered a drink. As he sat sipping his drink, a young woman sat down next to him. She turned to the cowboy and asked, "Are you a real cowboy?"

He replied, "Well, I've spent my whole life, breaking colts, working cows, going to rodeos, fixing fences, pulling calves, bailing hay, doctoring calves, cleaning my barn, fixing flats, working on tractors, and feeding my dogs, so I guess I am a cowboy."

She said, "I'm a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about women. As soon as I get up in the morning, I think about women. When I shower, I think about women. When I watch TV, I think about women. I even think about women when I eat. It seems that everything makes me think of women."

The two sat sipping in silence. A little while later, a man sat down on the other side of the old cowboy and asked, "Are you a real cowboy?"

He replied, "I always thought I was, but I just found out I'm a lesbian."

I'm not saying let's go kill all the stupid people. I'm just saying let's remove all the warning labels and let the problem work itself out.

An older, white haired man walked into a jewelry store one Friday evening with a beautiful young girl at his side. He told the jeweler he wanted a special ring for his girlfriend.

The jeweler looked through his stock and found a $5,000 ring. The old man said, "No, I'd like to see something much more special."

The jeweler went to his special stock in the safe and brought another ring back. "This one's $40,000."

The young lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man said, "I'll take it!"

The jeweler asked how payment would be made, and the old man said, "By check, but I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I'll write it now, and you can call the bank on Monday to verify funds. I'll pick up the ring on Monday afternoon."

Monday morning, the jeweler called the old man saying, "There's no money in that account!"

The old man said, "I know, but let me tell you about my weekend!"
